Ground breaking at garden launch!

Following the blessing of the ground on Earth Day, members of the community and the congregation gathered on Mother's Day to celebrate the launch of St. Matthew's Community Garden.  Chilly winds and threatening skies kept us indoors for the formalities, but we braved wind and hail to turn the sod in the plots that will be used this season to grow healthy food, and to help us engage with our community.  Oshawa Environmental Advisory Commitee representatives Suzanne Elston and Kristy Kilbourne, and Durham Integrated Growers' Chair Mary Drummond, as well as a number of our gardeners were in attendance.

Research and planning has brought the project to this stage with the help and support of many people.  Thanks to Parish Council for their approval, and to the congregation for being open to the idea and willing to share the gifts we've been given.  Funding from the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, and a Reach Grant from the Diocese of Toronto, have allowed for purchase of a garden shed, tools and supplies, and for a contractor to prepare the plots for growing.  Steering Committee Members Rev. Margaret and Rev. Lisa, Harry, Maja, Christine, Donna, Sylvia, Alison and Mary have shared their ideas and efforts.  Thanks also to Gord, Harry, Emma and David for construction help, and to all who contributed to refreshments.

Please introduce yourselves to our gardeners, and make them feel welcome.  They are Lynn, Michelle, Leah, Denise and Tim, Xiomara, Deb, Sylvia and Maja. Stop by the garden to watch our progress, or follow us here.
